Position Overview:
The Roads Operator Foreman is responsible for overseeing daily road maintenance, repairs, and snow removal operations while working alongside the road crew. Acting as the second-in-command to the Roads Superintendent, the Foreman ensures work is completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with regulations. This role involves supervising staff, training assigning tasks, operating equipment, and assisting with emergency road response.
The Foreman plays a key role in coordinating road repair projects, inspecting work quality, and maintaining operational efficiency. They also support training efforts, monitor safety procedures, and communicate regularly with the Superintendent to provide progress updates and address issues.

Key Responsibilities:
1. Leadership & Supervision:
- Assist the Roads Superintendent in managing day-to-day road maintenance operations.
- Lead and oversee road crews, assigning tasks and ensuring work is completed efficiently.
- Provide on-the-job training and mentorship to operators and laborers.
- Act as the point of contact when the Superintendent is unavailable.
- Supervise and participate in snow and ice removal operations.
- Assign routes and ensure plowing, salting, and sanding are done effectively.
- Monitor weather conditions and adjust work schedules as needed.
- Ensure equipment is properly maintained and ready for winter operations.
- Oversee and participate in road repair tasks, including pothole patching, asphalt work, and grading.
- Ensure proper installation and maintenance of street signs, guardrails, and drainage systems.
- Conduct site inspections to identify hazards and prioritize repairs.
- Maintain records of completed work and material usage.
- Operate and oversee the use of heavy equipment, including loaders, backhoes, skid steers, and dump trucks.
- Ensure proper care, maintenance, and servicing of all machinery and tools.
- Report mechanical issues and coordinate necessary repairs.
- Enforce safety protocols and ensure all crew members follow procedures.
- Conduct routine safety inspections and address any concerns.
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
- Provide guidance on best practices for safe equipment operation.
- Monitor work progress and adjust schedules as necessary.
- Maintain accurate records of job assignments, hours worked, and materials used.
- Assist the Superintendent with job planning and resource allocation.
- Experience in road maintenance, construction, or public works operations.
- Strong leadership and team management skills.
- Ability to operate and oversee the use of road maintenance equipment.
- Knowledge of road repair techniques, snow removal procedures, and safety regulations.
- Willingness to work in various weather conditions and respond to emergency call-ins.
- Strong communication and organizational abilities.
- Valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)
- Previous experience in a supervisory or lead role.
- Familiarity with job tracking software and work order systems.
- Additional certifications in safety, equipment operation, or public works management.
- Combination of fieldwork and administrative duties.
- Outdoor work in various weather conditions, including extreme cold and heat.
- Requires physical labor, including lifting, bending, and extended periods of standing.
- May require shift work, including nights, weekends, and emergency on-call availability.
