Definition

The Golf Course Greenskeeper, under the supervision of the golf course superintendent and assistant superintendents, performs routine manual labor using hand tools and mowing equipment involved in golf course maintenance and landscaping.

Essential Qualifications

Knowledge of safe, efficient mechanical operation of light motorized golf and landscape maintenance equipment, including but not limited to carts, mowers, trimmers, backpack blowers, and the intended implements involved; conduct semi-skilled grounds construction and maintenance work; ability to follow oral and written directions; basic understanding of the game of golf and preparation techniques for play; valid driver’s license.

Physical and Mental Requirements

Physical activity is moderate to demanding and will require bending, kneeling, and lifting.  Must be able to lift and carry up to 70 pounds.  Must be able to use hand and power tools, such as a shovel or a chainsaw.  Must be able to walk around clubhouse grounds, golf course, or other landscaped areas, and sit on and operate golf carts, utility vehicles, tractors, and mowers.

Must be able to remember information important to golf maintenance and landscaping programs; read, write, and verbally communicate with employees, management, members, and public.

Normal Responsibilities
 
  • Aids in daily course preparation, including course setup, irrigation, and traffic control, as well as being responsible for communicating irregular conditions with supervisor.
  • Operates hand mowing equipment required for maintaining greens, tees, collars, approaches, surrounds, and other areas requiring walk mowing.
  • Operates light equipment used for cultural and other maintenance practices around the facility, including debris hauler, pull behind blower, edger, sod cutter, spreaders, etc.
  • On each piece of equipment being used, checks gasoline, oil, and other fluid levels daily; reports equipment problems and failures to equipment manager immediately.
  • Performs hand work required for conditioning around golf course and landscape areas, such as string trimming, backpack blowing, bunker edging and raking, debris cleanup, weeding and mulching.
  • Aids assistant superintendents with hand-watering designated areas and the irrigation system operation as instructed.
  • Helps in directed project work around the facility, assisting in cultivating, grading, and seeding or sodding new areas; repairing damaged areas; and planting new trees, shrubs, and flowers.
  • As directed by supervisor aids in the applications around the golf course, such as sand/soil materials, fertilizer, and other amendments used for golf and landscape maintenance.
  • May be asked to operate larger mowing and maintenance equipment.
  • Performs other duties as directed by his/her supervisor.

This is a seasonal position.  Estimated season April/May through the end of October.
